Inspired by the many-petaled water lily, this versatile incense burner is scuplted from a darker gray soapstone. The craftsmanship is superb on this piece, with a nice weight in the hands. The center has a hole for stick incense, and the surface can also be used to burn cones. The neutral gray color of the fire-proof soapstone complements most any decor, and the open flower design is very efficient at catching wandering incense ash.

Our supplier of this item gathers its wares from a network of manufacturers, each of which based on the Ghandian concept of cottage industry, fair trade, and ethical trade. India is the land of cottage industries, which means that production happens in a small family business at home, where the working conditions are set by the producers themselves.

One such cottage industry was set up when our supplier met a carpenter who did not have any machinery and was lacking work. He bought the machines for this man and started handing him designs for incense holders and other handicrafts. This succesful cottage industry is now in it's second generation, passing from father to son.
